SPEAKER: Eric Brisson

"Carrying on the Family Fishing Tradition"

Today only 25 commercial fishermen are licensed for Lake Superior, down from 425 a century ago. Eric Brisson drew on an old family tradition to earn a license at a young age. As a boy, he spent summers helping his grandparents, Fern and Lloyd Hendrickson, with their fishing operation at Hat Point in Grand Portage. As a young man, he fished with his uncle, Ed “Ole” Hendrickson, completing an apprenticeship for the license three years ago, in his 20s. He uses retired fisherman Harley Toftey’s old dock and advice, his grandfather’s and fisherman Tommy Eckel’s boats. Eric builds on the past while updating equipment using his knowledge as a marine mechanic. While somethings change, others do not. Lake Superior continues to make commercial fishing a physically demanding, dangerous job while the appetite for locally caught fish increases.
